World Awaits 'Global Day of Prayer'

The whole world has received a noble call initiated by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity (HCHF) to pray for humanity on Thursday, 14 May, hoping for the abundance of God's giving and the great blessing of His creation on human beings.

Global day of prayer 

The HCHF called on religious leaders and faithful around the world to a day of fasting, prayers, and supplications for the good of all humanity next Thursday for an end to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

It invites people around the world to lay all their differences aside and come together and assume their responsibilities against this virus, the first and true enemy of humanity in this era.

The HCHF seeks to bring humanity together in prayer on Thursday, May 14, in what will be the largest gathering of humanity for one goal.

The event will be accompanied by unprecedented media coverage, through the Committee’s social media accounts with hashtag #PrayForHumanity to allow people to interact and share their videos, photos, and posts.

Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Pope Francis welcome HCHF call

Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb and Pope Francis welcomed the invitation, urging citizens around the world to send hope for the formation of the largest gathering of humanity to pray to God to lift the scourge,  reveal sorrow and spread a secure life for all human beings.

On Facebook, Dr. El-Tayyeb said, "I welcome this noble call for humanity issued by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity to all peoples around the world to take part in this human appeal, make devout supplications to God the Almighty, and do good deeds so that God would lift the coronavirus pandemic off all our human family."

"I invite everyone to participate in this call, and to pray sincerely to Allah the Almighty to lift this plight and to inspire scientists to find a cure that can cure this disease," he added.

In turn, Pope Francis said, "I welcome the proposal of the Higher Committee for #HumanFraternity that believers of all religions should unite spiritually on 14 May for a day of prayer and fasting, to implore God to help humanity overcome the#coronavirus."

Mutual visits between El-Tayyeb, Pope Francis 

May 2016

The first historic meeting between the two religious leaders comes after several years of tensions between the two institutions.

After years of suspended talks, Pope Francis received El-Tayyeb at the Vatican, on the sidelines of World Religious Conference held in Germany.

The historic visit between the two religious leaders, which is considered unprecedented, came after serious tensions between the two institutions during the time of Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.

April 2017

The second meeting between both scholars took place in Egypt, during Pope Francis visit to Cairo to participate in the World Peace Conference.

November 2017

Pope Francis welcomed Al-Azhar Grand Imam at the Vatican, on the sidelines of an international forum held in Rome titled East and West: Towards Civilized Dialogue.

During this meeting, they tackled various issues including sectarian conflicts, religious persecution, and racism, as well as peace, tolerance, and the values of justice and equality.

October 2017

During his visit to Italy, El-Tayyeb met Pope Francis. During their encounter, the Vatican head expressed appreciation towards El-Tayyeb efforts, stressing his keenness to enhance cooperation between both major institutions.

November 2019

The last meeting between El-Tayyeb and Pope Francis took place in Abu Dhabi to partake in the 3-day International Conference on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Coexistence.

During this conference, both leaders signed the "Human Fraternity" joint document.

On his part, El-Tayyeb stressed that his meeting with Pope Francis “is a true call to followers of religions around the world about the necessity of adhering to human brotherhood and rejecting hatred.”
