A woman was stabbed to death on the Swedish island of Gotland during a political festival, police announced on Wednesday.

Police revealed that a man in his 30s was taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the stabbing incident, which took place close to where Centre Party leader Annie Loof was giving a speech.

Moreover, the police stated that they had no indications of further threats to the festival and declined to comment on any motives or political affiliations of the suspect.

Daily Aftonbladet noted that the man had links to a neo-Nazi organisation, according to sources.

A week-long political festival is an annual event where thousands of politicians hold speeches and mingle with voters and tourists.

On a separate note, NATO members welcome Sweden and Finland into the alliance as delegations gathered in Brussels to sign “accession protocols” for the two states to join.

“This is truly a historic moment for Finland, for Sweden, for NATO — and for our shared security,” said Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, noting that NATO's door “remains open” to other democracies.

In his previous remarks, Stoltenberg affirmed: “I warmly welcome requests by Finland and Sweden to join NATO. You are our closest partners, and your membership in NATO will increase our shared security.”

The alliance believes that the accession of Finland and Sweden would hugely strengthen it in the Baltic Sea.
