Who Will Obtain Coronavirus Vaccine in US First?

Today, the chief scientific adviser for the U.S. government’s vaccine program said that "a COVID-19 vaccine will be available for Americans by Dec 11."

Dr Moncef Slaoui, “Operation Warp Speed Chief  Scientific Advisor, stated that the vaccine will be delivered to all areas reported by the states, within 24 hours after the approval.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s outside advisers will meet on Dec. 10 to discuss the authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech for urgent use.

The vaccine, which has been proven to be 95% effective with no major safety concerns. Pfizer expects to provide doses to protect 25 million people by the end of the year.

Slaoui stated that the inoculation will be distributed based on the population of each state, stressing that the priority goes for health care workers, front-liners and those who are at risk of dying due to the virus.

He continued that the country needs to immunise about 70% of the population to achieve herd immunity, which could happen May.

On the other hand, the US faces hardships to provide the inoculation to all citizens, while fighting the misinformation spread by the media.

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said it was critical to organize a meeting between President Donald Trump’s coronavirus experts and President-Elect Joe Biden’s team to avoid delays in distribution.

Slaoui stated that he had not met with anyone from Biden's team to coordinate their efforts to fight the emerging virus which could cause more deaths.

It is noteworthy that Coronavirus cases in the U.S has exceeded 12 million and rose by more than 1 million cases in less than a week for the first time.
