The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the anti-Corona vaccines appear to be slightly less effective in preventing acute infections and death but provide "great protection".

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the Omicron strain, which was first detected in South Africa and Hong Kong last month, has so far been monitored by 77 countries, and that it can be present in most parts of the world, but it should not be considered "moderate", according to Reuters.

"Omicron is now spreading at a rate not seen in any other strain before, even if Omicron causes less severe disease symptoms, this number of infections could once again undermine unprepared health systems," Ghebreyesus added in an online briefing.

WHO said that Covid-19 vaccines appear to be slightly less effective in preventing acute infections and death but provide "great protection".

Ghebreyesus pointed out that the emergence of Omicron prompted some countries to introduce booster dose programs against COVID-19 for all their adult populations, although researchers did not find evidence of the efficacy of booster doses against this strain.

"The World Health Organization is concerned that such programs will duplicate the stockpiling of COVID-19 vaccines we have seen this year and exacerbate disparities (among people)," he said.
