The UN has stated that evacuation orders from Israel to Gaza cause increased suffering for Palestinian families. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed extreme concern about a potential large-scale outbreak of polio in Gaza. This concern arose after the detection of poliovirus type 2 vaccine origin (VDPV2) in six environmental samples taken in Gaza.
During a UN press conference via video call, Ayadil Saparbekov, who heads WHO’s emergency services in the occupied Palestinian territories, expressed his deep worry about a potential outbreak in Gaza.
He affirmed the need for immediate action to prevent the outbreak from spreading within Gaza and internationally. Saparbekov also voiced concerns about the potential for other communicable diseases to break out in the city.
Saberkov highlighted the high risk of the circulating poliovirus spreading due to both its detection and the serious water sanitation situation in the area. Saberkov mentioned that the WHO is currently conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine the appropriate course of action based on the results.
However, Saberkov acknowledged the significant challenges posed by the constant attacks by the Israeli army in Gaza, making it extremely difficult to implement preventive measures.
