The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday that a United Nations employee who was injured in an Israeli air strike on Sana'a International Airport on Thursday had been evacuated to Jordan for further treatment.
The WHO Director-General wrote in a post on the social media platform X, attached with a photo sitting in a plane and apparently looking at the injured man: “Attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers everywhere must be stopped. They're not a target.”
Ghebreyesus was at the airport waiting for departure when the aerial bombardment took place, which injured the man working for the United Nations Humanitarian Air Transport Service.
A spokesman for the World Health Organization said the man was seriously injured.
Ghebreyesus reported that the United Nations staff member was now in Jordan. He added that the patient underwent successful surgery before being evacuated for further treatment.
On Thursday, Ghebreyesus, who was in Yemen during the Israeli bombing, confirmed that he was "safe", but pointed to damage to infrastructure at Sana'a airport.
