The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox up to mid-June reached 2,103, including one death, in 42  countries across five WHO regions (the Americas, Africa, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, and Western Pacific regions).

The UN organization indicated - in its latest update on the developments of the spread of monkeypox today, Saturday - that the confirmation of one case of monkeypox in a country is considered an outbreak.

It explained the unexpected emergence of monkeypox in several regions in light of the initial absence of epidemiological links in the regions that were historically reported.

The presence of smallpox indicates that there may have been undetected transmissions for some time.
