The White House has formally requested $58 million from Congress to strengthen protection for officials in the executive and judicial branches following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
According to Bloomberg, the administration of President Donald Trump also indicated support for expanding resources dedicated to safeguarding lawmakers amid heightened security concerns.
Kirk, 31, a prominent right-wing commentator and vocal supporter of Trump, was fatally shot on Wednesday while addressing students at a university in Orem, Utah. He had played a significant role in bolstering Trump’s electoral success and was known for his outspoken opposition to American military aid to Ukraine.
The alleged gunman, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested on the evening of September 11 after being turned over to authorities by his father, who reported that his son had confessed. President Trump condemned the killing and declared that he hopes Robinson receives the death penalty if convicted.
The administration’s urgent funding request highlights intensifying concerns over political violence in the United States and the growing pressure to bolster security for public officials.
