Liam Payne tragically died last week after falling from three floors from his balcony at the CasaSur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Impromptu vigils and memorials have been held by heartbroken One Direction fans across the world, who were devastated by the 31-year-old singer's tragic death.
The troubled One Direction crooner, who is dad to son Bear, 7, died instantly of massive internal and external injuries and had a toxic mixture of drugs in his system at the time of his death.
His distraught parents Geoff Payne and his Karen flew to Argentina to formally identify the late singer’s body and organize the return of the body to the UK.
Geoff, 66, has been warned he could have to wait for up to ten days to get permission to take the body of his son home.
The distraught father has since vowed to remain with him until he can return to the UK.
After arriving at the scene of his son’s death, Geoff had to formally identify Liam at the morgue. The pop star’s body is currently being held there while the Argentine Ministry of Justice officials continue investigations.
He also visited the hotel where his son died and thanked fans for their heartfelt tributes.
“But he has vowed to do right by Liam and will not go home without him,” a source close to Geoff told the Daily Mail. “It is the uncertainty of not knowing when this ordeal will be over is what he is finding very difficult to deal with. The Argentine officials say they expect the results to take ten days, but it might be a lot less time than that,”.
Meanwhile, a source close to the investigation said, “Detectives have all the footage now from Liam’s entire stay — from the moment he checked in to the hours after he died,”.
“Police are determined to trace everyone and have also been given a list of all guests as well as visitors. In addition, they have a full list of employees,” they added.
Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.
They believe he could have plunged from the balcony in a state of “semi or total unconsciousness” after drugs and alcohol were found in his room.
Earlier this week, a preliminary autopsy report from the Argentinian Public Prosecutor’s Office found that Payne died of “multiple traumas” and “internal and external bleeding.”
“The head injuries were sufficient to cause death, while the internal and external haemorrhages in the skull, chest, abdomen, and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death,” the Public Prosecutor's Office said. The full autopsy will be released in due course.
In addition to the pink cocaine, also called Tusi — a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine and ecstasy — the drugs detected in the late singer's bloodstream through toxicology screening included benzodiazepine, crack, and cocaine.
A makeshift aluminum pipe for ingesting the substances was also found nearby, ABC News reported.
Witnesses also said Payne was acting erratically in the hours before his death. A frantic hotel manager called police in Buenos Aires shortly before his death, alerting them that someone under the influence of drugs and alcohol was trashing the room and potentially endangering his life.
The “Strip That Down” hitmaker’s death is being treated as “inconclusive” as the investigation into his death continues. Officials were reportedly trying to locate two women who were seen with him on the day of his death and have since taken statements from them.
They have also been interviewing hotel staff and are trying to track down who sold Liam the drugs. This could take days to carry out, but because prosecutors do not believe anyone else is involved in Liam’s death, the investigation may be concluded in a matter of days.
However, his family may be forced to endure an inquest into the late singer’s death back in the UK. Once that happens, the pop star’s body remains will be released to his family for repatriation to England, meaning his funeral might be held at the beginning of November.
The British Embassy are supporting the grieving family as they make arrangements and it is expected that the funeral will take place in the singer’s home city of Wolverhampton. It’s not yet known if there will be any official memorial organized for the fans to pay tribute to the late singer as the funeral itself will be a private affair, attended by the singer’s close family and friends.
