The representative of the World Food Program (WFP) in Afghanistan said that “one out of every three people” in the country suffers from food insecurity due to several factors linked to the war and the repercussions of climate warming along with some other alternatives.
The WFP Representative Mary Ellen McGorty added, during a telephone conversation with Agence France-Presse (AFP) from Kabul, that the year 2021 will be a very difficult year in the first place.
In addition to the conflict, Afghans are suffering from an acute food crisis.
McGorty continued to say that the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is suffering from the second drought in three years in a row, and the population has not fully recovered from the consequences of the drought in 2017-2018."
She explained that wheat yield declined by 40% due to one of the driest winters in 30 years.
Little snow fell on Kabul this year, so the amount of water caused by the melting of this snow is very little."
She noted that this had a bad impact and was destructive to livestock in Afghanistan.
She said that the situation was exacerbated, of course, by the conflict in the country, so farmers were unable to harvest and fled their homes" while fields and orchards were destroyed.
The official of the World Food Program stressed that the destruction of infrastructures such as bridges, dams, and roads, impedes the arrival of food to worst-hit areas.
Meanwhile, a Taliban official said that many countries and organizations are communicating with the leaders of the movement to help evacuate their citizens or employees from the Afghan capital, Kabul.
On the other hand, the official added on Friday to "Reuters", a news agency, that the Taliban cadres are allowed to accompany Afghan civilians who enter mosques to perform the weekly Friday prayers.
Moreover, a White House official said that the US evacuated about three thousand people from Kabul airport in Afghanistan, yesterday, Thursday.
