The United States military is preparing for the possibility of sustained military operations lasting several weeks against Iran, should President Donald Trump order an attack, two U.S. officials told Reuters.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the planning, said such operations could escalate into a conflict more severe than any previous confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The preparations raise fresh concerns about the future of ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, as the prospect of military action threatens to undermine attempts to de-escalate tensions.
U.S. and Iranian diplomats held talks in Oman last week in an effort to revive diplomacy over Tehran’s nuclear program. The discussions took place amid a significant U.S. military buildup in the region, a move that has heightened fears of a renewed armed confrontation.
