Vietnam’s new internet rules came into effect on Wednesday, requiring Facebook and TikTok to verify users’ identities and hand over data to authorities.
Under Decree, all tech giants operating in Vietnam must verify users’ accounts via their phone numbers or Vietnamese identification numbers and store that information along with their full name and date of birth.
They must provide that data to authorities upon request and remove any content the government deems “illegal” within 24 hours.
The new rules went into effect on Wednesday, state news agency VNE Express reported.
Authorities said all social media sites have 90 days to provide data on “the total number of regular visits from Vietnam” and the number of regular users per month.
The decree also stipulates that only verified accounts can broadcast live, affecting the growing number of people who make a living through social commerce on sites like TikTok.
Apart from the implications for social media companies, the new laws also include restrictions on gaming for those under 18, with the aim of preventing addiction.
