Local media reported heavy gunfire near the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas on Tuesday, hours after Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as interim president. The gunfire appeared to have been triggered by the sighting of unidentified drones in the area.
The Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional reported that videos posted on social media showed the sound of gunfire and armed personnel surrounding the presidential palace, fueling speculation about a possible coup attempt, especially given that the incident occurred just hours after Rodríguez's inauguration.
The newspaper added that sources familiar with the situation later clarified that the incident was due to a mix-up within the security forces themselves. According to these sources, drones were deployed for surveillance purposes in the area without prior notification to personnel on the ground.
Upon spotting the drones flying over the site, some of the personnel opened fire, believing them to be a threat.
