Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Saturday called for the immediate start of the peace process in the Gaza Strip during the informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States in the city of Shusha.

In a speech published on his website, Mirziyoyev said, "We call for an immediate cessation of violence and the immediate start of the peace process."

He noted that the consequences of the ongoing bloody war in the Gaza Strip for the past nine months cause him "deep sorrow."

He emphasized that "nothing can justify the continuation of clashes that have led to the deaths of about 40,000 citizens, most of whom are women and children."

He concluded that the fundamental condition for ensuring strategic stability and peace in the Middle East is the "establishment of a free and independent State of Palestine."
