The United States has announced plans to upgrade its military command in Japan to a Joint Force Headquarters, aimed at deepening collaboration with Japanese forces.

This development comes as both nations recognize China as the "greatest strategic challenge" in the region.

This decision follows security talks held in Tokyo between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and their Japanese counterparts, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara.

The restructuring of the US military presence in Japan will involve a significant expansion of operational responsibilities and capabilities, marking the most substantial enhancement of US forces in Japan since their establishment.

This adjustment represents one of the most significant upgrades in the military relationship between the two countries over the past 70 years.

The new command structure will be introduced in tandem with Japan's plans to create a joint command for its own forces by March 2025.

This coordinated approach highlights both nations' commitment to strengthening their defense collaboration and addressing regional security challenges effectively.
