The United States will paint its border wall with Mexico black at the request of President Donald Trump in a bid to make the structure more difficult to climb under intense heat.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the move during a visit to El Paso, noting that the darker surface will absorb more sunlight, increasing deterrence against illegal crossings.
The wall, which already extends deep underground to prevent tunnelling, will be reinforced with additional security features.
Recent congressional funding will support the continued pace of construction as well as the installation of advanced technology, including cameras, lighting systems, and ground sensors. Plans have also been announced for new waterborne infrastructure, though details remain unspecified.
US Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks stated that the black paint will also help protect the structure from rust while enhancing its effectiveness as a barrier.
The wall remains central to Trump’s immigration agenda. Vice President J.D. Vance has confirmed that the project is scheduled for completion by the end of Trump’s second presidential term in 2029.
