The US is considering applying COVID-19 entry restrictions for travelers from China, US officials said on Tuesday.

The decision came as Beijing loosened Coronavirus measures and restrictions this month.

China sees a tragic surge in infections which motivates US officials to express concern at the rise of any new variants or mutations.

"There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing Covid-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC," the US officials said.

Beijing authorities acknowledged that the outbreak is "impossible" to track, in addition, there is no detailed data related to the outbreak and the linked deaths to Coronavirus.

The US said that it "is following the science and advice of public health experts, consulting with partners, and considering taking similar steps" to countries that announced public health measures to restrict the spread of Covid-19 such as Japan and Malaysia.

On the other hand, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, on Tuesday, that countries should uphold "scientific and appropriate" infection controls that "should not affect normal personnel exchanges."
