US Senator Lindsey Graham said the choice of Iran’s next leader is solely up to the Iranian people, stressing that it is not the role of the United States to decide the country’s future leadership.
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Graham addressed the Iranian public, saying they should choose wisely and that the United States seeks a better relationship in the future. He added that the decision regarding Iran’s leadership belongs only to its people.
Graham’s remarks came as President Donald Trump indicated he was considering who might lead Iran following reports of the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials. Graham said it is not the responsibility of the United States or President Trump to select Iran’s next government and ruled out any occupation of the country.
On Iran’s nuclear program, the senator said the United States would not allow any future Iranian government to pursue a ballistic missile program, develop nuclear weapons capabilities, or support terrorism.
