US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that direct talks will be held between Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and a senior Iranian leader on Saturday.
Rubio, in a statement reported by the American Alhurra channel, expressed his hope that these talks between Washington and Tehran would contribute to "achieving peace."
During his first presidential term (2017-2021), Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers.
The International Atomic Energy Agency says that since then, Iran has far exceeded the agreement's limits regarding uranium enrichment.
