US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed with Rwandan President Paul Kagame the developments in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The US State Department said - in a statement published on Wednesday - that Rubio expressed the United States' deep concern about the escalation of the conflict, especially after the city of Goma fell into the grip of the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group.
Rubio called for an immediate ceasefire, and urged all parties to respect territorial sovereignty and integrity, stressing that the main goal of the United States is to achieve a lasting peace that addresses security concerns and establishes a prosperous regional economy.
