US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed on Saturday "common challenges" facing Washington and Riyadh in his first telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that Bin Farhan congratulated Blinken on his appointment and said Riyadh is looking forward to working with Washington.

The agency added that Blinken and Bin Farhan also discussed "historical and strategic relations" between the two countries.

The phone call comes after Biden announced on Thursday that he was ending US support for Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

Biden also said that he will end all support, including arms sales linked to Saudi Arabia's ally UAE in the war.

Saudi Arabia’s response to Biden’s decisions welcomed his commitment to cooperate with the Kingdom to defend its sovereignty and confront threats against it, as State Department spokesman Ned Price noted that Biden made clear that the U.S. continues to support Saudi Arabia outside the Yemen war.
