US Military Budget Could Reach $1.5 Trillion in 2027

US President Donald Trump has called for a major expansion of United States military spending, proposing that the defense budget rise to $1.5 trillion in 2027, roughly one and a half times current levels.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump argued that rising revenues from import tariffs would make such an increase feasible. He said that without the large income generated by tariffs on foreign countries, he would have limited defense spending to around $1 trillion.

According to Trump, tariff revenues have produced financial gains that were previously unimaginable, enabling the United States to build what he described as an unprecedented military capability while also reducing national debt and providing financial benefits to middle-income Americans.

The president also sharply criticized the previous administration, describing former president Joe Biden as the worst in US history, and said the country’s current financial position allows for far more ambitious military investment.

If implemented, the proposal would represent one of the largest defense budget increases in modern US history and is expected to fuel intense debate in Congress over spending priorities, fiscal responsibility, and the long-term sustainability of tariff-based revenues.
