The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, said on Friday that Ukraine will not be able to fully recover the territory from Russia in the near future, but stressed that it is not "impossible."

Milley said, during a virtual event organized by the "Defense One" website, in response to a question in this regard: "A serious and very difficult military mission, but it is not impossible, and I do not think that this is possible in the foreseeable future or during this year."

"I am not saying that this cannot be achieved. I am saying that it is a very difficult task," he explained.

Milley's comments give a painful and grim reality to the stated goal and hoped-for ambitions of policymakers, diplomats, and defense chiefs in both Washington and Kyiv.

The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly talked about the desire to restore the Donbas region, control the land corridor to Crimea, and restore the peninsula itself, that is, restore the borders that existed before 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated publicly many times that the ultimate Ukrainian goal is to expel the Russians from Ukraine.
