On Friday, the United States announced that it will extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainians and Sudanese until the spring of 2025 due to the ongoing conflicts in both countries that have been ravaged by war.

The US Department of Homeland Security stated in separate statements that it will extend the temporary protection status for both countries for 18 months, starting from October 20th, 2023, until April 19th, 2025.

Furthermore, the department introduced amendments that will enable more eligible Ukrainians and Sudanese to apply for temporary protection.

This move aims to provide assistance to nationals of both countries who are studying in the US to maintain their student status, even if they need to reduce their course load to increase their work hours.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas mentioned that the ongoing Russian military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis necessitate that the US continue to provide safety and protection to Ukrainians who may be unable to return to their homeland.

The department stated that nearly 26,000 Ukrainians currently enrolled in the temporary protection status program will benefit from the extension, and around 166,700 Ukrainians will be eligible to join the program.

Officials from the department also pointed out that violent clashes erupted in Sudan in April 2023, resulting in the death of hundreds, political instability, outbreaks of violence, and human rights violations against civilians.

Currently, about 1,200 Sudanese people benefit from the temporary protection status program, in addition to 2,750 others who qualify to join the program.
