US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff publicly thanked Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for his pivotal role in reaching the Gaza ceasefire agreement, describing Egypt’s efforts as instrumental in creating renewed hope for peace.
Speaking during the signing ceremony of the Peace Council Charter, Witkoff expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for entrusting him with representing the administration during the negotiations to halt the fighting in Gaza. He also singled out several regional leaders and officials for their contributions, with particular praise for President Sisi, Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, and Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty.
“We reached an agreement in Gaza and created a sense of hope for the world,” Witkoff said, also acknowledging the efforts of Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and other regional partners. He noted that President Trump’s confidence in achieving peace had inspired extensive efforts, including coordination with Jared Kushner.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the newly launched Peace Council is focused on concrete action rather than rhetorical statements. Rubio stressed that the initiative represents a new phase in international peacebuilding, led by leaders committed to delivering tangible results.
Earlier, President Trump officially announced the launch of the Gaza Peace Council from Davos, marking its second milestone following the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement. He thanked members of his administration and declared that “peace has now been achieved in the Middle East.”
