The U.S. Embassy in Cairo joined partners from Al-Azhar, the Ministry of Education, and the American University in Cairo (AUC) today to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its English Language Mentor Program.

The ceremony took place at AUC’s Bassily Theater, where 500 attendees gathered to mark this milestone and honor the program’s contribution to English-language education in Egypt. Sheikh Ayman Abdel Ghany, Head of the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector; Dr. Ismail El Sherbini, General Manager of Professional Development for Al-Azhar Institutes; and Mrs. Eman Youssef, English Counselor at the Ministry of Education all attended the event.

AUC leadership also participated, along with the U.S. Embassy’s Regional English Language Office.

The English Language Mentor Program has trained 756 English teachers across all 27 governorates over the past decade, and those mentors have shared knowledge with thousands of their colleagues nationwide.

In his remarks at the celebration, U.S. Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy Ruben Harutunian stated, “Ten years ago, we launched the Mentor Program with a simple goal: to support teachers who shape the future of Egypt’s young people. Today, that effort has grown into a nationwide network of dedicated educators who learn from one another, inspire one another, and raise the quality of English education across all 27 governorates. English language programming is one of the most important aspects of the U.S.-Egypt strategic partnership that brings increased security and prosperity to both our nations.”

This year, for the first time, the Mentor Program is bringing together both novice and experienced teachers to help build a sustainable, nationwide culture of mentorship within Egypt’s English-teachingcommunity.

Through updated methodologies, hands-on practice, and collaborative learning, the program continues to strengthen teachers’ professional skills and equip them to serve as mentors and leaders in their schools. Through innovative strategies like the Mentor Program, the U.S. Embassy’s Regional English Language Office continues to support Egypt’s educators in delivering high-quality English language education and fostering future generations of learners.
