The Pentagon announced on Saturday that President Joe Biden's administration used emergency powers to allow the sale of about 14,000 tank shells to Israel without reviewing Congress.
It said in a statement that the State Department on Friday used emergency powers under the Arms Export Control Act for tank shells for immediate delivery to Israel worth $106.5 million, according to Reuters.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was determined to make the request and provided Congress with a detailed justification for the necessity of immediately providing tank shells to Israel in a way that serves the national security interests of the United States.
The sale will be from the US Army's stock and consists of M830A1 multi-purpose high-explosive anti-tank cartridges with a tracking device, and related equipment.
It added, "Israel will use this enhanced capability as a deterrent to threats in the region and to strengthen its internal defense," noting that there will be no negative impact on American defense readiness as a result of the sale.
