The Pentagon has announced the approval by the US State Department of a potential deal to sell Abrams tanks and other military equipment to Romania valued at $2.53 billion.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency noted that the potential deal includes 54 Abrams M1A2 tanks along with quantities of ammunition, machine guns, and various military equipment.

The agency emphasized that the potential sale will enhance Romania's ability to address current and future threats while acknowledging that it will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

US authorities have regarded this deal as serving US foreign policy interests and reinforcing national security by enhancing the security of a NATO ally.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated that the US administration has notified Congress about this deal, and lawmakers will have 30 days to review it.
