Kazem Abu Khalaf, a spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has highlighted the significant impact on displaced individuals due to Israel's blockade of essential aid into Northern Gaza. Despite the limited amount of aid, UNRWA remains a vital lifeline and the largest humanitarian agency operating in Gaza.
In statements to global media, Abu Khalaf described the prevention of UNRWA from delivering aid to displaced people in Gaza as a devastating blow, particularly amidst diseases and famine ravaging the population.
He noted that the decision to halt aid affects not only UNRWA's operations but primarily the beneficiaries of the agency's work. This action contradicts the international community's will, which advocates for increased and uninterrupted aid flow to Gaza, echoing statements by the UN Secretary-General on the necessity of flooding Gaza with assistance.
Abu Khalaf mentioned that the Israeli forces' decision to stop aid comes without any justification. This follows a decision a week prior, barring UNRWA's Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, from entering Gaza. Efforts at all levels are being made to seek a reversal of this decision, emphasizing the critical need for aid in the region.
