The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and Egypt announced that the Israeli authorities refused to allow the agency’s Director-General to enter the Gaza Strip on Monday, describing the step as unprecedented.
Speaking in a press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said: “I intended to go to Rafah today, but I have been informed an hour ago that my entry into Rafah is declined.”
In turn, the Egyptian foreign minister said UNRWA's Lazzarini was 'declined by the Israeli government, refused entry, which is an unprecedented move'.
Israel has accused UNRWA of being unable to manage the surge of aid on the Gaza side. However, they assert that they have not placed any restrictions on the entrance of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
