European airports are experiencing unprecedented disruption and chaos in air travel today, January 6th, as a combination of factors has affected millions of passengers and forced airlines to drastically alter their flight plans.

According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the main cause of this chaos is the severe winter weather that has struck large parts of the continent, particularly the heavy snow and challenging weather conditions in France, the Netherlands, the UK, and neighboring countries. This situation has persisted since the beginning of 2026.

The snow has led to the closure of runways at some major airports, such as Liverpool Airport in England, and the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, causing overcrowding and long waits for passengers in the terminals.
