UNICEF Egypt Representative Jeremy Hopkins held a visit to the Qustul border crossing, where he met those who had just crossed into Egypt after fleeing Sudan, to discuss their needs and how best to support them in collaboration with the Egyptian authorities and local partners.

He also inspected the first child-friendly space in Karkar bus station which was established in 24 hours to offer psychosocial support for displaced families and children coming from Sudan to Egypt.

In a video message, Hopkins said: "The situation in Sudan is catastrophic and there are displaced families moving now into Egypt and we need to be sure that we are there for them to support with basic needs."

He continued that UNICEF has been supporting the work of the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) by providing life-saving assistance and core relief aid, to new arrivals, including potable water, hygiene, sanitary kits, latrines, food, critical health care, as well as child protection and psychosocial support.

According to numbers UNICEF received from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, around 70,000 have crossed into Egypt, including 65,104 Sudanese and 4,876 third-country nationals fled from Sudan to Egypt, searching for a safe place to escape from the conflict there.
