UNICEF participated in a session titled “The role of civil societies in improving safe and orderly movement in the context of climate change” at the UN Egypt pavilion in the Blue Zone.

The session that was held on the sidelines of COP27, showcased how civil society is an indispensable partner in the global effort to combat climate change.

It also considered the vital role of civil society organizations ( CSOs) could play in raising awareness of the dangers of irregular migration and promoting the idea of safe and orderly migration in societies, especially for those who are willing to relocate due to economic and environmental challenges.

In his remarks, Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, said: “UNICEF partners with governments, development partners, International and national nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and civil society to serve the best interest of the most vulnerable children, youth, families, and caregivers at risk, including those at risk of climate mobility. As climate change impacts amplify migration, it is paramount to ensure that children’s needs in protection, health, and education are not compromised, delayed, or missed."

He continued: "Failing to uphold the rights of children on the move in the context of climate change could have significant consequences for an entire generation. This is why COP27 focuses on accelerating action to preparedness and response to climate change.”

The session was moderated by Amr Seleem, Climate Policy Advisor, and it was attended by Manuel Marques Pereira, IOM’s Head of Division for Migration, Environment, Climate Change and Risk Reduction, Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, Graziella Rizza, Head of Human Rights, at the EU Delegation, Fadi Dweik, Climate Change Technical Advisor for Save the Children, Abdelrahman Fahmy, CEO, Youthinkgreen.
