Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE), in collaboration with UNICEF and the Akelius Foundation, has launched a two-year initiative aimed at enhancing literacy and digital learning opportunities for children in vulnerable situations across the country.

The programme, supported by multiple implementing partners, introduces innovative blended learning approaches and equips community and public schools with digital tools designed to improve learning outcomes for marginalized children.

Central to the initiative is the Akelius digital language application, which allows students to learn English and Arabic through interactive multimedia activities at their own pace. The platform also supports teachers with personalized lesson planning and real-time monitoring of student progress.

“Every child deserves the chance to learn, regardless of who they are or the challenges they face,” said Shiraz Chakera, Chief of Education at UNICEF Egypt. “Inclusive education is a right and the foundation for children to grow, thrive, and contribute to their communities. Through this partnership, we are scaling proven best practices from around the world—harnessing digital tools, empowering teachers, and creating more inclusive, engaging classrooms. This ensures children across Egypt can access quality education and reach their full potential.”

The programme is set to directly benefit 7,500 children, with a focus on girls and children with disabilities, alongside 450 educators, while indirectly reaching an estimated 30,000 family members.

“For more than ten years, Akelius Languages has supported vulnerable children in around twenty countries worldwide,” said Kerstin Ekström, Akelius Foundation. “We are excited to bring this proven approach to Egypt, introducing it to refugee and host community children in both formal and informal settings—a vital step toward ensuring every child can develop strong literacy skills and a brighter future.”

Ahead of the 2025/2026 academic year, eight rounds of teacher training were conducted across Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Sharqia, preparing 250 educators to implement the programme effectively. Community schools and learning spaces were also upgraded to foster more inclusive and digitally enabled classrooms.
