The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has launched a new global campaign entitled ‘Hope Away from Home’. The campaign aims to encourage States to uphold the rights of people seeking safety from war, violence, and persecution.
This is especially important given the current record high of forced displacement globally, which affects 110 million people. Unfortunately, many policies are becoming increasingly restrictive, making it more difficult for displaced individuals to access asylum.
This has led to a rise in populist anti-refugee sentiment, as well as discrimination and xenophobia. People are often forced to take dangerous routes to find safety due to insufficient safe and legal routes.
While some countries have been welcoming and protective, more States need to show solidarity with low- and middle-income countries that receive most of the world's refugees.
In this context, the campaign calls for greater international cooperation, legal reforms, and policy changes to find lasting solutions that allow refugees to live in safety and dignity.
