The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that Syria continues to face a triple threat comprising insecurity, economic, and humanitarian crises, in addition to challenges concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs) and recent returnees to the country.
OCHA reported that due to the volatile security situation, humanitarian operations remain suspended in parts of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, Latakia, and Tartus governorates. Additionally, humanitarian aid shipments from Damascus to Qamishli in the Al-Hasakah governorate have been temporarily halted.
According to OCHA, 664,000 people are still recently displaced in Syria following the latest push to overthrow the Assad regime, most of them located in Idlib and Aleppo. After a peak displacement of 1.1 million people on December 12, approximately 486,000 individuals have since returned to their original areas by December 27.
In northeastern Syria, OCHA noted that conditions remain challenging for over 25,000 internally displaced persons still residing in 183 collective shelters, a decrease from the 40,000 reported a week earlier.
The report highlighted severe water shortages in some collective shelters in Qamishli, with most lacking adequate water supplies and sanitation facilities.
