The United Nations Secretary-General expressed deep concern on Thursday regarding recent military strikes exchanged between Iran and Pakistan amid escalating tensions in the region.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, speaking on behalf of Antonio Guterres, stated in a press release that Guterres calls on both countries to exercise the utmost restraint to avoid any further escalation of tensions.

He also urged them to resolve their differences through "dialogue and cooperation," according to the French news agency AFP.

Earlier on Thursday, a White House spokesperson affirmed that the United States "does not want escalation in South Asia and Central Asia," responding to questions about the recent exchange of strikes between Iran and Pakistan.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that the US administration is "closely monitoring" the tensions between the two countries.

He added that Pakistan first suffered a strike from Iran, which was a serious new attack and a fresh example of Iran's destabilizing role in the region.
