The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2799 on Thursday evening, approving the removal of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Hassan Khattab, who serves in the transitional government, from the sanctions list imposed on ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

The resolution, drafted and presented by the United States, received strong backing from 14 members of the Council, while China abstained from voting.

The newly approved measure reaffirmed the Security Council’s firm commitment to fully respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity, as well as its continued support for the Syrian people.

The resolution also welcomed Syria’s pledges to ensure full, safe, and unhindered access for humanitarian aid in accordance with international humanitarian law, along with its continued efforts to combat terrorism.

Additionally, the Council expressed its intention to promote long-term reconstruction, stability, and economic development across Syria, while stressing that these initiatives must align with the integrity and effectiveness of the sanctions regime targeting ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
