UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that the "Green Middle East Initiative" provides "clean energy" and protects the region in the future, indicating that the global economy is irreversibly moving towards decarbonization of all sectors.

The Deputy UN Chief called for the need to ensure that the transition to net-zero emissions is useful for all people, and all regions across the planet, especially those that depend on oil and gas revenues.

The transition from fossil fuels will undoubtedly be a challenge of epic proportions, and will require extensive and targeted investment to support those who will be temporarily affected," the UN official said in her speech during the Green Middle East Initiative summit hosted by the Kingdom of  Saudi Arabia (KSA).

According to the United Nations Information Center, She praised the efforts of world leaders aimed at forming the first alliance of its kind in the region to combat climate change in the Middle East and to provide a platform that combines knowledge and capital, in addition to laying the foundations for "climate diplomacy", which includes strengthening the political will necessary to bring about radical change.

Mohamed explained that there is an urgent need to reduce and stabilize global greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050, revealing this means a 45 percent reduction in global emissions by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations stressed the need to confront challenges and ways to address these challenges, saying that the initiative was designed so that it would not only help reduce emissions from the oil and gas industry in the region but would also create new carbon sinks and help restore and protect vast areas of land through afforestation.

She noted that the ambition to plant 50 billion trees is "really impressive, and it will have many common benefits for people.
