The United Nations Security Council has decided to extend the UN diplomatic mission in Afghanistan for another year.
In its decision yesterday, Friday, the Council tasked the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to continue its work until March 17, 2025.
The Council stated in a statement that delegates emphasized the importance of cooperation with the actual Taliban authorities on the ground to bring about lasting peace in the war-torn country.
They emphasized the need for continuous field presence.
The resolution called on all relevant stakeholders to coordinate with UNAMA in implementing its mandate and ensuring the safety, security, and freedom of movement of UN personnel and associated staff throughout the country.
It also requested the Secretary-General to provide a report every three months on the situation in Afghanistan and the implementation of UNAMA's mandate.
