UN Declares Readiness to Support Sri Lanka, Its People

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the readiness of the United Nations to support Sri Lanka and its people, stressing the paramount importance of maintaining peace, according to a statement by United Nations Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq.

The UN statement stressed that "the Secretary-General is following up the developments in Sri Lanka closely, stressing his solidarity with the Sri Lankan people,  calling on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue to ensure a smooth transition of power and find sustainable solutions to the economic crisis."

The Secretary-General of the United Nations condemned all acts of violence and demanded those responsible to be held accountable, stressing the utmost importance of maintaining peace, noting that the United Nations is ready to support Sri Lanka and its people.

Noteworthy, Sri Lanka is going through the biggest economic crisis in its history, with debts amounting to more than 50 billion US dollars, and bankruptcy is imminent.
