UN Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed that the only viable path to lasting peace in the Middle East is the two-state solution, stressing that no alternative can end the cycle of conflict.
Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Guterres described the devastation in Gaza as “approaching its third year,” with levels of death and destruction “surpassing those of any other conflict.” He underscored that famine has been declared in Gaza despite urgent measures ordered by the International Court of Justice, adding that those measures must be implemented immediately.
The UN chief condemned the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, insisting that “nothing justifies the collective punishment of the Palestinian people or the systematic destruction of the foundations of their lives.”
Guterres further warned that the absence of accountability fuels greater loss of life: “When accountability diminishes, cemeteries expand,” he said, urging the UN Security Council to become “more representative, transparent, and effective” in addressing global crises.
