The World Food Programme (WFP) has Issued a statement highlighting concerns over the potential impact of the El Niño phenomenon on several African countries.

The region already faces significant challenges, with nearly 47.4 million people experiencing severe food insecurity in parts of Southern and Central Africa.

To address the potential repercussions of the El Niño-induced drought, the United Nations' World Food Programme has allocated $12.8 million as part of its efforts to mitigate the effects.

These funds will be directed towards implementing a range of proactive measures aimed at safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of over half a million individuals.

According to the UN agency, the El Niño phenomenon is anticipated to peak between November 2023 and January 2024.

Coinciding with the lean season and extending into February of the following year, reduced rainfall is expected across many parts of the region, particularly during the critical agricultural period in December and January.

This is expected to have repercussions on harvests in April 2024.
