Ukrainian FM Hails "Productive" Talks in Nicosia Over EU Accession, Security

Ukrainian Foreign Minister (FM) Andrii Sybiha stated that he discussed with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, the priorities of Cyprus's upcoming presidency of the European Union, support for Ukraine's EU accession, and security cooperation. 

The talks also covered the utilization of EU defense and sanctions tools, as well as reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.

​In a post on the "X" platform following his meeting with Kombos in Nicosia, during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Cyprus,Sybiha described the discussions as "very productive."

​"We discussed the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency. I appreciate that Ukraine and our path to EU accession are at the top of the agenda," Sybiha said. 

He emphasized the importance of opening negotiation clusters in 2026 and highlighted Cyprus's pivotal role in this regard. Sybiha added that both sides discussed recent developments in the peace process in detail.

​He further noted: "We dedicated a significant portion of our talks to bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Cyprus, particularly in the fields of security and defense, and joint efforts using EU instruments, alongside Cyprus's role in strengthening European security. We also addressed the reconstruction of Ukraine, enhancing the resilience of the energy sector in the face of ongoing Russian attacks, humanitarian support, sanctions policy, and the utilization of frozen Russian assets for defense and reconstruction purposes."
