The Ukrainian capital experienced widespread electricity outages on Saturday due to technical problems affecting the national grid. Authorities declared an emergency blackout, and Kyiv’s subway system suspended operations, relying only on backup power for essential services.

Meantime, temperatures expected to drop to -24°C (-11°F) overnight, intensifying the crisis.

Also, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned of risks to Ukraine’s nuclear power plants amid ongoing Russian airstrikes.

President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the outages to technical issues in transmission lines connecting Ukraine with Moldova, which also experienced interruptions. The power restoration process is underway, with officials projecting full recovery within hours.

Despite the blackout, no Russian airstrikes were reported over Kyiv during the night, following a temporary pause in hostilities mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Officials from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States are scheduled to meet soon to negotiate a broader resolution to the ongoing four-year conflict.
