The International Court of Justice announced that Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Ukraine are suing Iran before it, seeking compensation for the families of the passengers of the plane that was shot down by Tehran in 2020.
These countries say Iran "violated a series of obligations" under the Civil Aviation Agreement by shooting down Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 after take-off from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board, including 15 children and 9 crew members.
It is noteworthy that last April, the military court in Iran announced a 13-year prison sentence for the main suspect in the file of the Ukrainian plane crash.
In the indictment issued, the first accused “believed, as the commander of the M-1 air defense system,” that the characteristics of the target were similar to a cruise missile and contrary to the orders of the command center and without obtaining permission and contrary to the relevant instructions, he fired two missiles at the Ukrainian plane.
On January 11, 2020, the Iranian armed forces announced that the Ukrainian plane was shot down by Iranian air defenses by mistake, noting that "the Ukrainian plane was shot down after it approached a "sensitive" military center.
