UK Trials Social Media Restrictions for Teenagers

The British government is launching a pilot program to restrict social media use among hundreds of teenagers to assess the effects of reduced screen time on mental health and behavior.

The six-week program will involve approximately 300 teenagers, applying different measures such as full app bans through parental control tools, limiting usage of apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat to one hour per day, and imposing a nighttime restriction from 9 PM to 7 AM.

This initiative comes after the UK Parliament rejected a full ban for under-16s in the proposed “Children’s Welfare and Schools” bill, prompting the government to test gradual measures rather than implementing sweeping restrictions.

UK regulators, including Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office, have called on technology companies to enhance child protection by improving age verification and restricting interactions with strangers. Similar policies are being implemented globally, with Australia banning social media for under-16s, Spain introducing comparable restrictions, and France considering a ban for under-15s.

In parallel, a scientific study led by the University of Cambridge involving around 4,000 students will examine how reducing social media use affects sleep, stress, body image, and overall mental health.

These measures are part of a broader context of increasing legal scrutiny on technology companies, with Meta facing accusations of failing to protect children and designing addictive features.

Observers suggest that the outcomes of these trials could lead to stricter regulations in the future, balancing digital freedom with the protection of younger users.
