The British government has announced plans to increase its humanitarian aid to Gaza by £19 million (nearly €22.8 million), citing the "catastrophic" situation in the region.
The UK’s Development Minister, Anneliese Dodds, made the announcement ahead of her attendance at a humanitarian aid conference in Cairo.
Dodds highlighted the urgent need for food and shelter in Gaza, particularly as winter sets in, emphasizing that the conference in Cairo would provide an opportunity to propose practical solutions to the ongoing crisis.
She also called on Israel to act immediately to ensure unhindered access to humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
The new funding allocation includes £12 million earmarked for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Programme.
An additional £7 million will support the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The announcement comes as UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini revealed on Sunday that humanitarian aid delivery via the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza had been suspended due to security concerns.
