Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Saturday that the United Kingdom will deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the North Atlantic and Arctic Circle later this year, significantly expanding Britain’s military presence in the High North.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Starmer said the deployment will be led by HMS Prince of Wales, the largest vessel in the Royal Navy fleet. The strike group will operate alongside the United States, Canada and other NATO allies as part of a broader effort to reinforce Euro Atlantic security.
The UK Ministry of Defense stated that the carrier group will include Royal Navy warships, F 35 fighter jets and helicopters under an operation named Firecrest. US aircraft are also expected to conduct missions from the carrier during the deployment.
The operation will involve thousands of personnel drawn from all three branches of the British armed forces. Officials said the mission forms part of a wider NATO initiative launched this week to strengthen allied security in the Arctic region, where melting ice is opening new maritime routes and increasing geopolitical competition.
The Arctic has become a growing focus for global powers as climate change reshapes shipping lanes, energy access and military positioning. France has also announced plans to deploy its own carrier strike group to the region in 2026.
Starmer emphasized the importance of strengthening military capabilities to deter aggression and ensure readiness in an increasingly volatile security environment.
The Arctic deployment highlights Britain’s renewed strategic focus on NATO defense, transatlantic cooperation and securing emerging northern sea corridors.
