The British Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, underlined the UK's dedication to fostering peace in the Middle East during his attendance at the Cairo Peace Summit on 21 October 2023.

Emphasizing the UK's stance, Cleverly highlighted the nation's intent to contain the regional conflict and counter threats from Hamas. Collaboratively, the UK aims to work towards a solution that maintains Israel's safety while safeguarding Palestinian rights.

Acknowledging the delivery of essential aid across the Rafah border into Gaza, Cleverly voiced the UK's continual support for unhindered and secure humanitarian aid access to Gaza. This commitment covers essential provisions, including food, water, fuel, and medical supplies, emphasizing civilian and humanitarian personnel's safety.

To address the escalating conflict in Gaza, the UK Prime Minister declared a £10 million aid package. This aid complements the existing £27 million provided this year, marking a 37% increase in support for the region.

Following the Hamas attacks on 7 October, the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have engaged in diplomatic discussions with approximately 20 countries. Cleverly commented on the pressing need for aid in Gaza and emphasized his participation in the summit to curb violence and ensure the safe return of hostages.

Cleverly's attendance at the summit succeeds his recent diplomatic visits to Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar. During these visits, he advocated for humanitarian access to Gaza, the safe return of British nationals, and the release of British and other foreign hostages.
